Usually singles aren't included in my listening project because rock had entered the album age by the 70s, and most singles ended up on albums, but it wouldn't feel right to let the date "Let It Be" was released pass by without acknowledgment and listening.

Also released today was Psychedelic Shack by the Temptations, according to the album's Wikipedia article. Napster doesn't have it, but I pieced together six of the eight tracks from compilations and substituted the single version of the song, "It's Summer" for the album version.

Also released on this music-heavy date was the Charles Manson album, LIE: The Love & Terror Cult, according to the album's Wikipedia article.

One of my rules is one album per day, so I decided to go with the Temptations.

Time to delve into the backlog of albums released on some indeterminate (to me) date in February 1970. Today I decided to go with Moondance by Van Morrison.

I'm skipping a week because the live Iron Butterfly album is the last release with a definite date I have on my list for February, and I'm gradually trying to get in synch with 2008, monthwise and daywise, as I mentioned in a previous entry.

Today Live by Iron Butterfly was released, according to the album's Wikipedia entry. Unfortunately Napster messed up their version of the album: the tracks are all mislabelled, "In the Time of Our Lives" is missing, and In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is included twice, in case once wasn't enough. Fortunately, I've become well acquainted with the Iron Butterfly repertoire over the last year and a half, so the erroneous song titles can't throw me off.

Today's selection from my backlog of albums released at some indeterminate (to me) point in 1969 is Juicy Lucy by Juicy Lucy. According to the All Music Guide review, this album was notorious for its cover art, and I can see why. Also notable for being the second release on Vertigo records in the UK, or at least I assume it was since its catalog number is VO 2 (Colosseum's Valentyne Suite was VO 1, and, most importantly, Black Sabbath's first album was VO 6).

I'm listening to an abbreviated version of the album I subcompiled from a compilation on Napster (six of eight tracks).

Today's selection from my backlog of albums released at some indeterminate (to me) point in 1969 is Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum. Although I can't find a definite release date, I'm guessing that it must have been released late in '69, or maybe even early '70 because there are ads for it in February issues of Rolling Stone, and the single, "Spirit in the Sky" entered in the Billboard top ten in March.

I'm listening to Roxy by Roxy. The All Music Guide just says that this was released sometime in 1970, but there's an ad for the album in Rolling Stone 53, printed Feb. 11, 1970, so I'm inferring that it was released around then, or at least that it was available in stores around then. That is, I probably could've walked into a store and bought this on Feb. 16, 1970, and it probably would've been on the "new releases" rack, if there was such a thing in record stores in 1970.

Today's selection is The Yellow Princess by John Fahey. Actually, I can't even tell with any certainty if this was released in 1969. The All Music Guide says '69, but various other sources say '68.

Today is Friday, February 13, 1970, the day the first Black Sabbath album was released in the UK.

The world would never be the same.

Now, any Black Sabbath fan will tell you that what I'm listening to is NOT the version of the album that was released in the UK on February 13, 1970. On that version, the first track on side 2 was "Evil Woman." I'm listening to the American version, the one with "Wicked World" instead of "Evil Woman." That wasn't released until May 1970. I would be happy to purchase an mp3 of "Evil Woman" and substitute it for "Wicked World" in my mp3 player, but it's not available from Amazon. Maybe itunes has it but I don't have an ipod. So I'll just have to skip "Wicked World" and imagine "Evil Woman" when I listen to this album until I get to May.

I can't help noticing the coincidence that I have reached the release date of this album on Walpurgisnacht.

If anything was released today specifically, I don't know about it, so I'm listening to Kool & the Gang, the first Kool & the Gang album, probably released either Jan. 1970 or Dec. 1969 (Wikipedia entry says the former; several other sources say the latter.) I couldn't get the full album, so I cobbled together an abridged version (six of ten songs) from various greatest hits compilations on Napster.

I'd like to see the film, which premiered yesterday in New York at the Coronet Theater, 59th and 3rd, according to Vincent Canby's review in the New York Times, but getting a copy has proven to be difficult so far.

(I speed time up when nothing's going on because I'm trying to get caught up to the same date in 1970 that it is in 2008. It's weird reading New York Times headlines about snow and cold weather when its 75 degrees outside. I mean, not that it's not weird reading headlines about Nixon and Agnew, or about John Lennon and Yoko Ono getting their hair cut, but I think being at the same place in the cycle of seasons, school semesters, holidays, etc. will make it easier to jump back and forth across the 38-year gap.)

(My rule is that I listen to something on the day it was released if I have an exact date, or as soon as possible afterward, but when I made my list of 1970 albums I only knew this was released sometime in January.)

I'm not aware of any albums that were released today, so I'm listening to the Meters' second album, Look-Ka Py Py, which, as far as I can tell, was released in January 1970 (or maybe December 1969).

I also watched the Honeymoon Killers, which, according to Roger Greenspun's review in today's New York Times opened yesterday in Manhattan at Cine Malibu, on 59th St. between 2nd and 3rd.
