Today is Thursday, March 19, 1970.

I'm listening to Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy, by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, released sometime in February 1970 according to the Wikipedia article.

Today is Tuesday, March 17, 1970.

I'm listening to The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other by Van der Graaf Generator, released sometime in February 1970 according to the Wikipedia article.

March 16, 1970

Today is Monday, March 16, 1970.

I'm listening to Back in the USA by the MC5, released sometime in February 1970 in the US according to Martin Strong's The Great Rock Discography, 7th ed. Corroborating Strong's date is a full-page ad for the album in Rolling Stone 52 (print date Jan. 28, 1970).

March 15, 1970

Today is Sunday, March 15, 1970.

I'm listening to Morrison Hotel by the Doors, released sometime in February 1970, according to various sources.

March 11, 1970

Yesterday was Wednesday, March 11, 1970, the day Deja Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young was released according to the Wikipedia article. I'm having to make do with the six of ten tracks I can get from Napster until I can get a copy from the library or something.

March 10, 1970

A couple of days ago was Tuesday, March 10, 1970.

I watched The Dunwich Horror, based on the H.P. Lovecraft story, released on January 14, 1970, according to IMDB.

March 8, 1970

Sunday, March 8, 1970.

Listening to LIE: The Love & Terror Cult by Charles Manson, released March 6, 1970, according to the Wikipedia article.

March 7, 1970

Today is Saturday, March 7, 1970.

I'm listening to Climbing! by Mountain, released today, at least according to the album's Wikipedia article. Released on a Saturday? One thing I've learned from this project is that in the old days albums were not all released on Tuesday as they are now, and movies didn't always premiere on Fridays as they nearly always do now. But a Saturday release date still seems a little strange. Anyway, I guess the Mountain album was released sometime around now because there's an ad for it in a March issue of Rolling Stone.

March 6, 1970

Today is Friday, March 6, 1970.

Today the Beatles' "Let It Be"/"You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)" single was released in the UK, according to multiple sources. Usually singles aren't included in my listening project because rock had entered the album age by the 70s, and most singles ended up on albums, but it wouldn't feel right to let the date "Let It Be" was released pass by without acknowledgment and listening.

Also released today was Psychedelic Shack by the Temptations, according to the album's Wikipedia article. Napster doesn't have it, but I pieced together six of the eight tracks from compilations and substituted the single version of the song, "It's Summer" for the album version.

Also released on this music-heavy date was the Charles Manson album, LIE: The Love & Terror Cult, according to the album's Wikipedia article.

One of my rules is one album per day, so I decided to go with the Temptations.

March 5, 1970

Today is Thursday, March 5, 1970.

I'm listening to Atomic Roooster (sic) by Atomic Rooster. The UK version was released, according to multiple sources, sometime in February 1970. The US version was released later with significant overdubs and a different track order, says the All Music Guide.

March 4, 1970

Today is Wednesday, March 4, 1970.

The last couple of days I've been listening to, from the February 1970 backlog...

Shazam by The Move, released sometime in February 1970 according to the album's Wikipedia article.

Sweet Baby James by James Taylor, released sometime in February 1970 according to multiple sources.

March 1, 1970

So here we are at Sunday, March 1, 1970.

Time to delve into the backlog of albums released on some indeterminate (to me) date in February 1970. Today I decided to go with Moondance by Van Morrison.

February 21, 1970

Today is Saturday February 21, 1970 through Saturday, February 28, 1970.

I'm skipping a week because the live Iron Butterfly album is the last release with a definite date I have on my list for February, and I'm gradually trying to get in synch with 2008, monthwise and daywise, as I mentioned in a previous entry.

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

February 20, 1970

Today is Friday, February 20, 1970.

Today Live by Iron Butterfly was released, according to the album's Wikipedia entry. Unfortunately Napster messed up their version of the album: the tracks are all mislabelled, "In the Time of Our Lives" is missing, and In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is included twice, in case once wasn't enough. Fortunately, I've become well acquainted with the Iron Butterfly repertoire over the last year and a half, so the erroneous song titles can't throw me off.

February 18, 1970

Today is Wednesday, February 18, 1970.

Today's selection from my backlog of albums released at some indeterminate (to me) point in 1969 is Juicy Lucy by Juicy Lucy. According to the All Music Guide review, this album was notorious for its cover art, and I can see why. Also notable for being the second release on Vertigo records in the UK, or at least I assume it was since its catalog number is VO 2 (Colosseum's Valentyne Suite was VO 1, and, most importantly, Black Sabbath's first album was VO 6).

I'm listening to an abbreviated version of the album I subcompiled from a compilation on Napster (six of eight tracks).

February 17, 1970

Today is Tuesday, February 17, 1970.

Today's selection from my backlog of albums released at some indeterminate (to me) point in 1969 is Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum. Although I can't find a definite release date, I'm guessing that it must have been released late in '69, or maybe even early '70 because there are ads for it in February issues of Rolling Stone, and the single, "Spirit in the Sky" entered in the Billboard top ten in March.

February 16, 1970

Today is Monday, February 16, 1970.

I'm listening to Roxy by Roxy. The All Music Guide just says that this was released sometime in 1970, but there's an ad for the album in Rolling Stone 53, printed Feb. 11, 1970, so I'm inferring that it was released around then, or at least that it was available in stores around then. That is, I probably could've walked into a store and bought this on Feb. 16, 1970, and it probably would've been on the "new releases" rack, if there was such a thing in record stores in 1970.

February 15, 1970

Today is Sunday, February 15, 1970.

I've worked through my backlog of albums released at some indeterminate point (indeterminate to me at least) in January 1970, so it's time to hit the backlog of things released at some indeterminate point (to me at least) in 1969.

Today's selection is The Yellow Princess by John Fahey. Actually, I can't even tell with any certainty if this was released in 1969. The All Music Guide says '69, but various other sources say '68.

Today is Saturday, February 14, 1970.

The world is still recovering from the release of the first Black Sabbath album yesterday.
